Executive Summary
Paragon Micro, serving as a first-tier subcontractor to Huntington Ingalls Industries, delivered a ruggedized tactical communications solution for the United States Air Force 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron in Vilseck, Germany.
The solution enabled mission-ready command and control of airpower assets in support of US Army units, providing secure, mobile, and resilient communications capability designed for harsh operational environments.
There were no technical problems, deviations, or schedule delays.
Mission Challenge
The 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron trains, equips, and maintains air liaison and terminal attack control capabilities in support of ground forces, including the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
The squadron required:
• Tactical communications capability for deployed operations
• Secure routing and switching infrastructure
• Mobile server and virtualization environment
• Integrated storage and WAN acceleration
• Ruggedized equipment for shock, vibration, drop, and temperature extremes
• Reliable uninterruptible power for mobile operations
The environment demanded mobility, resilience, and uninterrupted performance at the tactical edge.
Technical Approach
Paragon Micro collaborated with Klas and Cisco to design a best-of-breed tactical communications solution engineered for OCONUS deployment conditions.
Integrated Tactical Kit
The delivered solution included:
• Routing and switching
• Servers and virtualization
• WAN acceleration
• Storage systems
• UPS power systems
• Cabling and accessories
• Radio integration
All components were integrated within a rugged Klas Voyager 8 chassis housed in a carbon fiber transit case designed for stackable, mobile transport.
A removable rack mount UPS chassis provided a rugged backplane for network expansion, while wide ranging AC and DC input capability supported flexible deployment scenarios.
Operational Engineering
Cisco routers enabled third-party system integration while supporting secure communications requirements.
Uninterruptible power supplies with onboard charging allowed battery operation in austere environments, maximizing operational mobility.
The architecture supported command and control of airpower assets in active combat support operations.
Sustainment and Support
The engagement included one year of hardware maintenance coverage, expandable based on mission needs.
Support included:
• Access to 24-hour cleared technical support
• Rapid response for mission-critical issues
• Accountability and lifecycle sustainment
Performance Metrics
• OCONUS tactical deployment completed
• 100 percent technical requirement fulfillment
